LOCALISED CURRICULUM

At St Joseph's school, students are at the centre of all teaching and learning. Each child is encouraged to be an active learner in the process understanding their own learning journey.  Learning may be personalised, utilising current hybrid teaching practice (due to changes  with Covid) or mainstream teaching. We support inclusive practices for  all students, taking into account their aspirations, interests and cultural  identities .  Our goals are embedded in the school's charter and form the basis of learning in our school.

We endeavour to involve students with authentic learning contexts, which reflect the NZ curriculum, and the needs and interests of the tamariki and community.  We have a strong focus on Enviro Schools and a strong learning focus on our local and national whenua.

Literacy and Numeracy remain at the foundation of all learning.   Curriculum coverage is monitored by the Principal and staff to ensure our tamariki do not miss out particular Essential Learning areas, Curriculum strands and Key Competencies that we are required to cover.

St Joseph's Waitara is currently working on further developing our shared view of a localised curriculum.  Cultural Competencies and a commitment to the educational principles of Te Triti is important to SJW.

We endeavour to honour the dimensions of wairuatanga (spirituality), tinana (the body) , hinengaro  ( the mind) and whanaungatanga (the extended family

We believe in being responsive and respectful in delivering the curriculum to match the reality in which our tamariki and whānau live.

We believe in whānau and Kaupapa.
